SEO for a new website: what needs to be done before launching?

The Importance of SEO Preparation Before Launching a Website

A common situation is that a website has gone through all stages of development and survived the launch, but once it reaches an SEO specialist, it turns out that the structure now needs to be changed, URLs corrected, pages rebuilt, or internal linking modified. For a website launch, search engines need more than just the content itself: they also need pages to be accessible for crawling, technically sound, with proper internal anchors and an appropriate overall site architecture. Therefore, to avoid unnecessary problems, SEO for a new website should be planned before launch. Below, we will go through a practical preparation plan.

Building the Semantic Core and Determining Search Demand

First, you need to collect the website semantic core – an appropriate set of primary and additional keywords and phrases that will be used for search engines. At this stage, we try to understand the actual search demand. For example: “New website development”, “Website design replacement”, “Website is not working” and so on.

Next, we determine search intent – the purpose for which a person entered the query. Based on this, both commercial and informational queries can be identified. For example:

  • “New website development” – the final intent will be to find the appropriate service.

  • “Website design replacement” – the need for a specifically defined service.

  • “Website is not working” – to obtain useful information about a specific problem.

After that, the queries should be clustered – similar queries should be combined into groups. For example:

  • First cluster:  “New website development”, “Website development service”;

  • Second cluster:  “Change website UI/UX”, “Website design replacement”;

And already at this stage, it becomes clear why well-planned SEO before launching a website is so important – the semantic core and formed clusters begin to determine its future SEO structure.

Building the Website SEO Structure

This is a logical continuation of the work carried out in the previous section. Based on the defined semantic core, we begin determining category and subcategory names, introducing informational pages and a blog, and thinking about future landing pages.

If we rely on our previous examples of website development, the logical SEO structure of the website will look as follows:

  • Homepage:

  • Website Development:

  • Online store;

  • Promo websites;

  • Corporate websites;

  • Design Development:

  • UI/UX design;

  • Website redesign;

  • Blog:

  • “Why is the website not working?”

All these pages do not exist independently of one another – they are connected through breadcrumbs, text anchors, internal anchors, etc. The website never leads to a “dead end”. All pages are structurally and semantically connected, creating an ideal “loop”. The semantic structure should be determined before launch so that the pages do not have to be rebuilt later.

URL Preparation

Before the website starts being indexed, it is necessary to prepare and standardize the URLs. The following points should be considered:

  • URL logic and readability – if we link to the “Website Development” page, the final word in the URL sequence should contain something like “web-development”, rather than a random combination of numbers and letters;

  • Consistent format – all names are written in lowercase, we use “_” between words when forming a phrase, set a trailing slash at the end, and choose http settings with a correct redirect to https. In short, all URLs should be standardized. The format itself should be approved before launch, protecting against future revisions and, even worse, pages with a 404 error.

On-page SEO

After creating pages for specific queries, it is time to move on to the direct optimization of individual website pages. Let's go through the main points:

  • Title – the page and search title. It should clearly explain the topic of the page while being relevant to search engines. It is worth remaining concise and not trying to include several keywords at once;

  • Meta – a brief “summary” of the page content. It additionally strengthens the title with keywords for search engines.

  • H1 – the main heading directly on the page;

  • H2-H3 – subheadings under the main heading. They primarily exist to provide a logical page hierarchy, but they can also be strengthened with keywords and phrases.

  • Content – the page text itself, which addresses the customer's search intent.

  • Alt – an image description. It supports accessibility and additionally explains the image when necessary. It also helps search engines through relevant “keywords”.

After planning the On-page SEO structure before launching the website, it is necessary to check whether Title, H1, and H2 are duplicated. Overall, the entire page should have a correct structure, metadata, and properly prepared images.

Technical SEO Test

Now, before launch, it is necessary to check the technical component – this will allow search engines to correctly recognize and index the required pages. The following should be taken into account:

  • Search engine accessibility – define the sections to be crawled using robots.txt, while the XML sitemap identifies important pages. Control the transition from the staging stage to the production stage;

  • URL correctness – this point speaks for itself. We check the correctness of links according to the points defined earlier in our “URL Preparation” section;

  • Security and UX – configure http with a redirect to a secure https page. Adapt the page for mobile devices and page loading speed. Most importantly, test Core Web Vitals – metrics that determine how quickly content appears, how the page is displayed, and its visual “consistency”.

  • Technical accessibility – considering that website operation heavily depends on JavaScript, before launch it is necessary to check that search engines correctly “read” keywords, links, navigation elements, etc.

Connecting Analytics and Search Tools

After preparing and testing the SEO component before launching the website, it is necessary to configure tools for monitoring its performance. Given Google's dominant position among search engines, special attention should first be paid to the following tools:

  • Google Search Console – used to monitor the website's presence in Google search results and helps track search queries, indexing, clicks, and impressions. It helps prevent indexing problems.

  • Google Analytics 4 – a tool for analyzing user behavior. It shows where a user came from, which pages they visited, and whether they filled out a form, registered, or purchased a product or service.

Preliminary SEO Audit

At this stage, a final SEO audit of the website is carried out – a review of the SEO work completed. The following factors are taken into account:

  • Broken links – whether we are directing the user through a broken link or to a page that no longer exists;

  • 404 error – checking URL correctness so that they do not return a “page not found” status;

  • Redirect chains – checking the link chain. A link should lead directly to the required page rather than passing through “neighboring” pages before reaching the final destination;

  • Duplicates – making sure that information is not duplicated across different URLs;

  • Canonical – checking that the correct “working” page has been defined when similar content exists across several URLs;

  • Metadata – checking the correctness and relevance of all the elements mentioned in the “On-page SEO” section;

  • Orphan pages – ensuring that there are no pages that are difficult to find or are not indexed by search engines at all;

  • Robots.txt та Sitemap – making sure that Robots.txt crawls the required sections and that the XML sitemap contains only URLs that need to be indexed;

  • Final indexing “check” –  whether all important pages have been indexed and whether there are any technical conditions preventing this.

The checking process can also be automated by using SEO auditing tools such as Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, and Ahrefs Site Audit.

What Needs to Be Checked Immediately After Launch

After the successful launch of the website, there is a small checklist to go through to make absolutely sure that SEO has been configured correctly:

  • Website accessibility for Googlebot – make sure that after launch the website is visible to search engines;

  • Run the XML sitemap through Google Search Console – submit Google a list of current URLs that need to be discovered;

  • Checking the main URLs – using the same Google Search Console, check the most important URLs and whether the canonical versions are being indexed;

  • Analytics check – whether Google Analytics 4 sees visits and records inquiries or purchases.

  • Indexing and error analysis – give Google time to “crawl” the website and then analyze the results, namely which pages have been indexed, which have not, and understand the reason.

Conclusion

Considering the above, it becomes clear that the SEO of a new website begins long before its launch. First, you need to prepare the semantic core, build the structure, configure URLs, navigation, and technical optimizations. This is an important stage of website preparation that should not be neglected and where professional expertise is essential.
